Mica Plate by Shoyeido - for heating (not burning) Aromatic materials
As an alternative to directly burning Incense sticks or cones, aromatic materials such as wood chips, resins
and kneaded Incense may be heated to produce the desired fragrant effect.
This method involves filling a bowl 2/3 full with Ash or Sand, lighting a Charcoal brick (all available from Vectis Karma) which you place on top of the ash/sand. You may now drop/lay aromatic material's on top of the glowing charcoal, so they burn and release their fragrance. However, some find this direct method harsh and smokey, hence this Mica Plate. By placing this plate on top of the charcoal, and then placing your aromatic material on the plate, you heat rather than burn. This makes the fragrant experience less harsh, more gentle and controllable. Using this technique the Mica Plate acts as an insulator between the charcoal and the aromatic material.
Using a good quality Ash or sand (as we sell here) this dissipates the heat evenly out from the charcoal and protects the bowl it sits within. Still be mindful of the type of bowl you use - ceramic and cast iron are best - avoid plastic!
