Morning Star Patchouli Japanese Incense - powerful and evocative.
Patchouli is a species of herb from the mint family known scientifically as Pogostemon cablin, a native of tropical Asia. A strong fragrance that is more woody than herbal.
It has been valued since ancient times; with the Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun being laid to rest with approx. 40 litres of patchouli oil – as discovered upon his tomb opening by Howard Carter in November 1922.
More recently, Patchouli became synonymous with the Hippy movement of the 1960’s – being used then as a perfume and as a ‘cover up’ for other aromas. Part of the negative connotations came with the use of very inferior (and synthetic) grades of Patchouli at that time. This is certainly not the case with this Incense from Nippon Kodo.
Karen @ Vectis Karma says "Poor memories initially put me off any Patchouli fragrance, but Nippon Kodo have produced a fine version here. I find this earthy, woody and green; all in equal quantities. As one of Morning Star’s pure scents this is another surprisingly complex one.”
